Portuguese Conductor Cesário Costa with the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra
|
The Portuguese conductor Cesário Costa made his first appearance before the Ankara public on the 19th of November, conducting the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, with the support of the Embassy of Portugal.
The event took place at the Bilkent Concert Hall, one of the major venues for classical music in the Turkish capital.
A Portuguese composition – Symphonic Overture No. 3, by Joly Braga Santos, was heard in Ankara for the first time. The program continued with Chopin's "Piano Concerto No. 2, F minor, Op 21"; Fauré, "'Pelleas and Melisande' Suite for Orchestra, Op 80", and ended with Grieg, "Lyric Suite, Op 54". On the piano was the prestigious Turkish soloist Mühiddin Dürrüoglu.
Cesário Costa (b. 1970) is one of the most active conductors of his generation in Portugal.
His repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music , including the world première of more than eighty pieces. He has worked with a large number of contemporary Portuguese composers. Cesário Costa has worked with artists such as António Menezes, António Rosado, Brandford Marsalis, Boris Berezovky, David Russel, Elizabete Matos, Gerardo Ribeiro, Mário Laginha and Ute Lemper (soloists), Luís Miguel Cintra and Terry Jones (stage directors).
Cesário Costa is Chief Conductor of Orchestrutopica and Principal Guest Conductor of Orquestra do Algarve. Since December 2008, he is the President of the Board of Metropolitana and Artistic Director of the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.
Joly Braga Santos (1924-1988)
The music of Joly Braga Santos can be seen mainly as a fusion of various European styles, particularly of Western Europe. But as he said himself: "I have always understood that I had to create my own style and my music was to be the result of that creation." The melody was for him the reason for music to exist.
The musicologist João de Freitas Branco, author of the reference work on the history of Portuguese music, highlighted the cultural generosity of the largest Portuguese symphonist. "He is the opposite of the artist that only ‘talks’ for a privileged minority. He wanted a lot of people to come to enjoy his art." To communicate was essential to him.
Elected by UNESCO as one of the top 10 composers of contemporary music then, Joly Braga Santos said about himself, paraphrasing Stravinsky, "I do not consider myself a composer, but an inventor of music."
